Questions From Parents

Clear answers about our private online English lessons, tutors, learning approach and free trial.

Before Your Child Begins

If you have a question that is not answered here, send it through our trial request form. We reply personally by email.

1 Getting Started

Who are the lessons for?

EnglishGen offers private online English lessons for children ages 4–13. We welcome complete beginners as well as children who already understand or speak some English.

Is the trial lesson really free?

Yes. The trial allows us to meet your child, observe their current English level and discuss an appropriate lesson plan. Requesting a trial does not enroll you in a paid plan or create an automatic subscription.

How do we request a trial?

Complete the short trial request form with your child’s age, approximate English level, goals and preferred times. We will reply personally by email to arrange the lesson.

2 Lessons and Learning

Are the lessons private and personalized?

Yes. Every lesson is one-to-one. During the free trial, we observe what your child can understand and communicate. As lessons continue, we adjust the language, pace, repetition and activities according to the child’s age, level, interests and progress.

How long is each lesson?

Families may choose 30- or 60-minute lessons. Thirty minutes often works best for younger children and beginners. Sixty minutes may suit older learners who can remain engaged for a longer session.

What kind of English will my child learn?

We teach natural American English with an emphasis on understanding, speaking, pronunciation, vocabulary and confident communication.

What teaching approach or curriculum do you use?

We use a semi-custom approach rather than one fixed textbook or publisher. Lessons combine age-appropriate speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, phonics, reading and grammar according to the child’s level and goals. CEFR levels may be used as a general reference, but EnglishGen is not an official Cambridge or Oxford program. We normally provide the digital materials, so families do not need to buy a textbook unless we discuss it first.

How interactive and engaging are the lessons?

Children actively answer questions, repeat and use new language, read, describe pictures, make choices and complete short speaking activities. We vary the pace and materials so the child participates instead of simply listening to a lecture.

How do you correct mistakes?

We correct mistakes supportively and selectively. The tutor may model the correct form, ask the child to try again or provide focused practice. We do not interrupt every sentence, because children also need time to think and communicate confidently.

How do you help a child who is shy, anxious or reluctant to speak?

We begin with a calm pace, simple choices, extra thinking time and predictable activities. A child may start with pointing, one-word answers or repetition before building toward longer responses. We encourage participation without embarrassing or pressuring the child.

Do you teach school homework or exam preparation?

Our main focus is practical English communication and steady language development. We do not position our lessons as school homework tutoring or test-preparation courses.

3 Tutors, Parents and Payments

Will my child have the same tutor?

Whenever possible, lessons are scheduled with the same tutor. A familiar tutor helps children feel comfortable and allows us to follow their progress consistently.

What experience do the tutors have with young online learners?

EnglishGen is an independent two-tutor team with more than ten years of online ESL teaching experience. Our experience includes teaching thousands of learners and more than 11,000 online classes, with extensive work supporting children and Asian learners. We adapt lessons with visual prompts, clear modeling, repetition, gestures, short activities and frequent opportunities to respond.

Do the tutors speak my child’s primary language?

Lessons are taught mainly in English, and we do not guarantee that a tutor speaks your child’s primary language. We use clear demonstrations, pictures, gestures, repetition and examples to make meaning understandable. A parent may provide brief help when genuinely necessary, especially during a beginner’s first lessons.

May a parent attend, and what are the lesson etiquette guidelines?

Yes. Parents are welcome to observe or provide quiet support, especially during the first lessons. Please help your child join on time from a quiet space with the device and audio ready. Parents may help with technology or refocusing, but should allow the child to answer independently and the tutor to guide the lesson.

What does my child need for online lessons?

Lessons are held through Zoom. Your child will need a stable internet connection and a computer or tablet with working audio. A quiet learning space is also very helpful.

How does payment work?

For now, EnglishGen accepts payments only through PayPal. Prices are shown in Japanese yen, with no enrollment fee. After the free trial, we will confirm the selected plan and provide payment instructions personally. No payment is required when requesting the trial.

Are lesson payments refundable?

Completed lessons, late cancellations and missed lessons are non-refundable. If you need to stop a prepaid plan, please contact us. Requests for a refund of unused lessons will be reviewed individually. Any approved refund may be reduced by non-refundable payment-processing fees. This does not affect rights provided by applicable law.

4 Scheduling and Progress

Can we cancel or reschedule a lesson?

Yes. A lesson may be cancelled or rescheduled without charge when we receive at least four hours’ notice. Later cancellations and missed lessons normally count as used. Genuine emergencies may be considered individually.

What happens if my child is late or misses the lesson?

The tutor will remain available for the first 10 minutes. A late lesson still ends at the originally scheduled time. After 10 minutes without contact, the lesson is normally treated as missed and counts as used.

What happens if there is an internet or technical problem?

If the problem is on the EnglishGen tutor’s side, the lesson will be rescheduled without charge. If the problem is with the family’s device or internet connection, we will try to reconnect, but a replacement lesson cannot always be guaranteed.

Do prepaid lessons expire?

Prepaid lessons are intended to be used within the purchased plan period, which will be confirmed before payment. Lessons properly rescheduled under our cancellation policy may be carried forward to the next available time. Extensions for genuine illness or emergencies may be considered individually.

How often should my child take lessons, and when might we notice improvement?

A regular schedule is more helpful than occasional lessons. One or two lessons each week may suit many learners, but the best frequency depends on the child’s age, attention span, current level and goals. There is no fixed timeline or guaranteed result. Small improvements in comfort, vocabulary and willingness to speak may appear within several weeks, while broader language development usually requires consistent work over several months.

Will parents receive feedback, and should my child practice between lessons?

Yes. We share observations after the trial and provide brief, practical feedback as lessons continue. Short, regular practice can help new language become easier to remember, so we may suggest reviewing vocabulary, reading aloud or using a few target sentences. Extensive homework is not required unless it has been discussed with the family.

Can we change lesson plans or continue lessons while traveling?

Yes. Contact us before your next set of lessons begins to discuss changing the lesson length or monthly frequency. Children may usually continue while traveling if they have a quiet space, stable internet and a suitable device. Please confirm time-zone changes in advance. All changes depend on tutor availability, and the normal cancellation policy continues to apply.

Can siblings take lessons?

Yes. Because lessons are private and personalized, each child should have an individual trial and lesson plan. Tell us about both children in your request, and we will help arrange suitable times.
